The Left Unity alliance, which includes the All India Students’ Association (AISA), the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), achieved a significant victory in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union elections held on Thursday, securing all four central panel positions.
In contrast, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s parent organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, did not win any seats.
AISA's Aditi Mishra was elected president, garnering 1,937 votes, defeating ABVP's Vikas Patel. SFI's K Gopika was elected vice-president with 3,101 votes.
Sunil Yadav from DSF took the position of general secretary with 2,005 votes, while AISA's Danish Ali was named joint secretary with 2,083 votes.
Following her victory, Mishra expressed hopes of holding the administration accountable and addressing critical issues such as insufficient library seating and educational rights. She emphasized the importance of reinstating the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment.

The SFI remarked that the election results reaffirmed JNU students' dedication to the university's progressive, democratic, and secular values.
According to their statement, this decisive win signifies a strong rejection of right-wing authoritarianism and reinforces JNU's reputation as a center for critical thought and resistance.
On the other hand, Patel from ABVP mentioned facing numerous challenges during the election process, claiming that the administration had initially rejected his nomination.
He described the contest as closely fought, highlighting the need to address fundamental issues such as women's health, hygiene, infrastructure, and sports facilities.
This election outcome represents a setback for ABVP, which had regained a foothold in the student union's central panel last year when Vaibhav Meena won the joint secretary position, marking the first victory for the organization in a decade.
ABVP's last presidential win was in the 2000-2001 academic year, when Sandeep Mahapatra secured the position.
